Why Smaller Brands Gain Ground in AI Responses

Across independent studies, LLMs show more citation depth and a stronger tilt toward relevance than pure authority signals. That shift opens real room for lower ranked but high quality pages to surface.

Here’s what the research says (so far).

Rankfuse reports a negative correlation between domain authority and AI citations (-0.23). In plain terms, lower authority sites got cited more often.

Princeton University‘s GEO experiments show a similar pattern on visibility. Pages that sat around 5th in classic rankings gained 115% visibility inside LLM responses, while top ranked sites dropped 30%.

Semrush finds LLMs maintain 0.5-0.65 correlation with traditional rankings at the domain level, yet also shows that ChatGPT Search pulls from far deeper in the tail. When ChatGPT includes links, almost 90% come from pages ranking 21 or lower for the related query.

Depth is not just rank position. SE Ranking analyzed 46,299 AI citations and found that about 45% to 47% of cited pages have minimal Google traffic, 10% to 13% get zero traffic, and roughly 92% have fewer than 50 referring domains.

Rankscale.ai, as summarized by Search Engine Land, shows Perplexity referencing about 13 brands per answer, far above the 3 to 4 brand baseline in other systems. That is a broader source mix in a single response.

Semrush’s AI Mode study calls out specialized sources like Mapbox and OpenStreetMap that rarely rank for the same queries, yet get cited due to topical fit.

Ahrefs finds that sites receiving under 10k visits can expect 0.3% of their traffic to come from LLMs, vs. 0.1% for those exceeding 1 million visits. When users suddenly see a lesser-known brand cited as a topical authority, they’re most likely to check it out. Also, across 55.8M AI Overviews, the top 50 domains take 28.9% of citations, which still leaves most citations to the long tail.

If quality (expert depth, original data) and topical relevance can beat traditional ranking signals inside LLMs, this creates opportunities for smaller brands and content creators to gain visibility – raising the odds you are cited even if your page sits past the top 20. Authority still matters at the domain level though, so it can’t be ignored.
