Value-Driven Dashboarding

A former manager of mine was tasked with unifying our marketing data. At the time, we were jumping between scattered reports. Having our morning coffee while manually building on-the-fly reports in SA360 was a regular Monday. So, we built our first official dashboard: a flashy, visually pleasing setup. But there was one problem: it wasn’t telling the story we actually needed to tell.

Many dashboards show impressions, reach, CTRs… these are useful indicators, but not “the” story. The goal should be to establish a direct link between these signals and net financial outcomes. A great marketing dashboard doesn’t just look good; it answers critical questions:

➤ Are we acquiring customers profitably? Align cost per acquisition with lifetime value.

➤ Which channels drive the most profit? Break down net profit contribution by campaign.

➤ What happens when we adjust spend? Build scenario analysis into your dashboard to forecast impact before making a move.

A dashboard should be a profitability engine, not a reporting tool. It should become the single source of truth that marketing teams, finance leaders, and executives rely on to make data-backed, revenue-focused decisions.

Are your dashboards guiding strategy, or just reporting numbers?
